It was also the first plane to fly across the English Channel. Bleriot once said about airplane crashes, " ... he (the pilot) must not try to save both (himself and the plane). I throw myself upon one of the wings, and although this breaks the wing, it causes me to alight safely." ("Contact," Villard, p. 47)
